Five Things I Loved And Bought

Dear Anjelica Huston,

I know you’ve been concerned about my wardrobe lately, so I did a little shopping and here are some of the things I purchased. I was in desperate need of some new shoes so my search started there. I found these delightful Vans on sale for $40 (they’re supposed to be $90).

As you my know, I was raised in Yosemite Valley and I’ve never seen a Yosemite shirt this cool. I got this on sale for $15.

Apparently I really like Vans, because I bought these too. They were also on sale for $40 (from $80).

This I bought from the flea market for $60. It’s the coziest, comfiest thing in the whole world. The price was kind of steep but it was worth it. Except for the fact that I thought it gave me scabies because I got a mysterious rash today after wearing it without washing it. I immediately rushed to the emergency room and found out that my scabies was actually razor burn. But I’d still love this sweater even if it had given me scabies (which is a terrifying mite that eats away at your skin until you look like a disgusting leper, limbs literally falling from your body faster than you can say “do you have any refreshing Diet Coke?”). It’s soft and warm and it reminds me of all that is happy and good in the world.

I spotted these boots a few months back and snagged them for $20.

The only problem with the boots is that I don’t have any bootcut jeans for them to fit in to. Thus, I posted the following thought on facebook which a friend immediately ridiculed me for:

Honestly, jeans not fitting over your boots is a really big issue in this country and I wish people would take it more seriously. Or at least give me the sympathy I deserve when I am going through a tough time. Thanks for listening, Anjelica Huston. I knew I could always count on you.

Love,
Orlando

5 Haute Things for the Homme: Striped Duvet Covers

Dear Diary,

This week, Emily and I are busy prepping for a bedroom makeover next week. It’s for the adorable April Bowlby, for those of you “Drop Dead Diva” fans out there. All this bedroom researching has me thinking about my own bedroom (I’m in desperate need of a new duvet cover). It’s hard t find bedding that is masculine enough for a dude’s apartment. Most of it is all flowery and obnoxious. Thus, I tend to fall back on stripes. Anyone who knows me knows I love stripes. While simple, stripes are so beautiful:

Now, onto the the duvet covers I was happy to discover. With my lover. And his mother.

This one has a much more vintage/aged feel. Not as graphic as some of the other stripes but I like it. $99 from Pottery Barn.

These are super cheap. $29.88. From amazon.com. Can’t beat the price, even if they disintegrate upon being unwrapped.

This set is not cheap. $280. But I’m sure the quality is worth the price. By Dwell Studio.

A designer friend of mine recently bought this one. $69. From West Elm.

I love a good nautical stripe. This one is from Pottery Barn for $149.

So now that I’ve found all these I’m going to buy all of them and change my duvet every day. I don’t have a stripe addiction or anything. I’m fine. GET AWAY FROM ME AND LET ME LIVE MY LIFE!!!

Love,

Orlando

Haute Thing: Table Calendar

Dear CB2,

I’m totally a sucker for adorable little calendars that I can put on my desk and then forget to update. Thus, I was totally excited when I found this piece the other day whilst shopping for this week’s episode of SFAS. I’m going to stick this on my desk and just pretend it’s my birthday every day, leaving the calendar stuck on July 5.

Love,
Orlando

Five Haute Things: Headphones!

Dear Music Loverz,

You know what’s cooler than being an actual cool person? Looking like one because you are wearing totally fun headphones! I have always had a thing for humans who wear unnecessarily large headphones, especially ones in kookie colors. I don’t really understand how people wear these bulky headphones while working out (I mean, they’re pretty much earmuffs, don’t they get hot?). The following are the five headphones I’d buy if I was forced to run out and get some right now. Enjoy!

Banjo by WeSC

I like how basic and streamlined these are. I’d definitely wear these with a purple Justin Bieber style baseball cap and some heavily styled swoop bangs. Holler!

Form 2 by Bang Olufsen

If I were a Robot Businessman from The Future, I’d wear these.

Panasonic AV Room Headphones

These are a classic, what’s not to love?

Urbanears by Urban Outfitters

Anyone who knows me knows I have a huge man-crush on aqua. I kinda want to bite these.

Maraca by WeSC

I’d like to wear these with some skinny jeans and a too-big tank top whilst skateboarding. If only I knew how to skateboard…

So, in conclusion, please, don’t stop the music.

Love,
Orlando

PS: I have no idea how any of these sound. They could sound totally awful and tinny and gross. But that doesn’t really matter. What matters is that they look cool. Duh.

Five Haute Things for the Homme: Accent Lamps

Dear Diary,

In about a month, I’ll be moving into a (yet to be found) apartment and the one thing I’m most concerned with is light. I like my apartment to be super bright at all times. Having too many lights on makes me feel cozy and protected. And like I’m slowly killing the earth (sorrlz). For the sake of the environment, I use compact fluorescents whenever possible (Ikea has great ones, by the way. They have a warm tone unlike most of the depressing, pore-accentuating bluetone ones on the market). I like lamps that have something to say. Something like “Hello Orlando, welcome home! If you were responsible enough to have a dog, he would greet you at the door and love you unconditionally. But instead you have me, a lamp that you bought. And I love you because if you didn’t exist no one would ever turn me on and I’d be useless.” Here are a few examples of such lamps:

Eclipse Light by Maurício Klabin

I like this light because it was designed in 1982 and it’s called the “Eclipse.” I was born during a lunar eclipse in 1982. Even if you weren’t born during a lunar eclipse in 1982, you can still appreciate the playfulness of this lamp, which has a shade that can be molded into a number of different fun configurations.

Diesel Fork Table Light from The Conran Shop

This lamp is ridiculously expensive ($747) but I like it anyway.

Crane Desk Lamp from CB2

I don’t know when the public is going to start an uprising against this “Grellow” color from CB2 but it’s kind of everywhere. I find the color really appealing and fun for now, but wonder if it’s going to look barfy in a few years. It’s a fun way to add a color pop to a room, and at the end of the day it’s just a little lamp, not a giant sofa, so it’s no biggie if you hate the color by 2014. All that being said, the shape of the lamp is utterly pleasing and classic.

Isamu Noguchi Table Lamp [Model 1N] from the Noguchi Museum Store

My mom went to the Noguchi Museum (in Queens) a few years ago and came back with all these crazy adorable Noguchi lamps. Because there are so many out there, paper lamps can look super cheezeballz, so it’s nice to see them nicely designed and manufactured.

Alan Table Light by 7Gods

This lamp is kinda crazy and I’m not sure I’d ever have it in my own place, but it’s very beautiful. I’m trying to envision where it would make sense, maybe some kind of 80s Regency, all white/glass/mirror house in the Hollywood Hills? Whatever I still like it. Sorry.

Okay, so go buy all these lamps now and illuminate your life.

Love,
Orlando
