Sofa’s Choice

Dear Sophia Loren,

You know, if you were my daughter I would have named you Sofa Loren. I really love a good sofa. I’ve been searching for a new one for quite some time. My old sofa was great. Totally big mid-century piece. But it took up way too much space in my living room because it was 110″ wide. Which I loved but it left no room for side tables, which I believe to be a necessary part of having a sofa if you want to host parties because where else will people put their drinks?

I loved the shape of this sofa. Very clean lines yet still interesting.

Emily and I found this piece for $99 at Goodwill. It was completely disgusting when we found it but we could tell it had potential. It was filthy and it needed new foam and everything, but according to our upholsterer the wooden frame was still very strong. And it’s 80″ so it leaves plenty of room for side tables. The best part about this sofa is that it’s a sofabed, which is a huge thing for me because I live in a one bedroom apartment and I have nowhere for any visitors to sleep. Tears.

Unfortunately the inner bed mechanism had to be replaced, which added $200 to the budget. This is the sofa mid-way through the process, before the new bed mechanism was installed.

This is how dirty it was. <Insert barfing noises>.

And here is the finished product. Yay!

I chose to cover it in a beautiful peacock blue velvet I bought for about $25 a yard (I needed 16 yards). This soft velvet feels like the tender touch of an angel.

The lines of this sofa are very similar to the old one. Sloped arms, tufted back. I love it all.

I accessorized the sofa the same way I did the old one and put it on the same gallery wall. I’m kind of loving it and I can’t wait to have a guest so I can show them the super crazy half-spring/half aerobed mattress I got for it. It’s SOOOOOO comfy I considered sleeping on it instead of my real bed.

In the end, here’s how the cost of the sofabed broke down:

Sofabed: $100
Fabric: $400
New Bed Frame: $200
Upholstery: $600
New Mattress: $300

Total: $1600

So all in all it’s a $1600 sofa. Which isn’t super cheap but is pretty good for a custom sofabed that no one else in the world has. I know I love this new addition to my family. This Valentines Day I’ll be sending it Valentines and asking it to be my mine. I can’t wait!

The Rose Bowl: My Heart Will Go On And On!

Dear Kate Winslet,

Remember that scene in Titanic where you and Leonardo Dicaprio are so cold that you look like this?

Yeah, me neither. It’s been ages since I saw that movie. But the above picture describes perfectly how cold Emily and I were when we showed up to Rose Bowl on Sunday at 5:45 AM. I was pretty much wearing a speedo and a backpack and my teeth were chattering (I think I need to hire someone to dress me in the morning, I’m a total idiot). Emily was dressed more sensibly, but by the end of the morning neither of us could feel our feet. I tell you this not to make you feel sorry for us, but to let you know how very dedicated we are at beating people to the best deals at the Bowl. We love our clients enough to freeze to death in order to find furniture for them.

We liked this chesterfield for $800. Emily was all “It’s real leather!” and then I was like “No it isn’t.” and then she was like “You ruin everything.” And that was that.

Emily practically started making out with this sofa when she saw it. It’s freshly reupholstered velvet that you just want to stick your whole face in. $750. A steal! We didn’t buy it because we didn’t have a client for it and Emily’s blue sofa collection is getting out of hand. (I’m scared).

If Brian ever asks me what he can do to keep Emily interested, I’m going to tell him to dress up in a wicker costume. I mean, every time that girl sees something wicker she’s all over it. I like wicker too, but I think wicker is a lot harder for dudes to get away with so I tend to run the other way when I see it. This was $300. I had to pull Emily away from it, kicking and screaming.

This was one of those moments when you’re like “Is this cool? Or ugly?” And then you blink and when you open your eyes you realize it’s hideous and feel ashamed for looking at it in the first place. God, why am I so mean today? I think it’s my OrlanDiet. I’M SO HUNGRY!

We bought this delightful table for our equally delightful client. $695.

Who doesn’t love a worn leather suitcase? $20.

Get this: 90 yards of fabric for $90. That’s a dollar a yard! Trust me, I was a math major. (No I wasn’t). And it’s so cool. I hope there’s some left over for me to make Hammer Pants out of.

Little brass table, come to me. $30.

Hi Woven Chair, I just love those turned arms! $75.

Those Kilim pillows are killin’ em! $40/set of 2.

We wanted to buy this coffee table for our friend Corbett but instead we bought it for our other friend Rachna. $300.

We purchased this suave guy for a bachelor pad we’re doing. $135.

These French friends are going to be king chairs at another home we’re decorating. $90/set 2.

Look at these little brass antelope bookends! $40.

We bought this classic dresser for our bachelor pad. I kind of coveted it, but I already have a dresser and it would be rude to steal from our clients. Right? $400.

We bought these two mid-century chairs for a project we like to call “The Cool House” (because the clients are so cool). We thought the retro fabric on the left might scare the homeowners. So if they don’t want it I’m taking it home. I’ll name him Harold and he will be my new boyfriend. We’ll argue about how he’s such an old fuddy duddy and can’t keep up with the times. Eventually, he’ll undergo a massive surgery so that I will love him again. I’m scared that I just made that story up. The pair cost $600.

Do you think it’s okay for a boy to have one of these crazy big round loungers? Because I really want one. This one was pretty rad. Emily was all “I love the pattern!” and then I was like “EWWWWWWW! That COLOR!” and she was like “I’m not talking about the stupid color I’m talking about the pattern!” and then we were fighting and then we made up and then we hugged. $300.

We bought this ugly old vinyl ottoman for $60. But guess what, this ugly old vinyl ottoman is going to be reupholstered in sumptuous linen and is going to be the most glamourous coffee table ottoman ever known to man. So there.

We thought this dresser was cute. But it was an actual piece of junk so we passed. Literally falling apart before our eyes. $125.

I don’t know why I took a picture of this. Probably because it was so disgusting. Reupholstered they’d be totally cute Hollywood glam, but who let their cat EAT these things? I mean, just imagining what happened to them is giving me nightmares. $300/pair.

We found these fun French jugs. They’re big, and weren’t cheap. Sometimes you gotta pay the price. $160/set 3.

All in all, it was the most fulfilling day of our lives. Once the sun came up, the freezing weather subsided and was replaced by warmth, fun, and about five million people eating hot dogs right in front of my face. Afterward, Emily, Corbett and I went to Secret Lunch (at a location SO secret, no one will ever find it) and talked about how we’d remember our day at the Rose Bowl forever, and would someday tell this legend to our grandchildren and their grandchildren. No we didn’t. We talked about boys can clothes and the mall. We’re only human.

The Worst Flea Market Experience in the History of Time!

Dear Emily,

Remember last weekend when we went to the Long Beach Antique Market and it was, like, the worst experience of our whole lives? Well, it was raining, which was a bad sign, but we went anyway. As we were arriving (later than normal due to both of us oversleeping), all the vendors were rushing to put their stuff away, running away from us in terror like we were zombies coming for their flesh. For those of you who don’t live in Southern California, it should be noted that people here respond to rain as if it were the worst natural disaster in the world. I don’t personally own an umbrella or any other gear that would protect me from rain. So when it rains it kind of ruins the world. And flea markets. Thus, Emily and I pretty much started crying and whining as soon as we got to Long Beach. I was unconsolable. Until Emily slapped me and told me we better get shopping before all the stuff was packed up and taken away. We frantically ran from vendor to vendor in search of deals. Despite the life ruining weather, we found some scores.

I kind of like these stupid mannequins. I would.

We liked this bench for one of our clients but it’s SO LONG!

I liked this outdoor fire pit thing. If I were a lady I would put this in my ladygarden. That wasn’t meant to sound dirty but it kind of did. Sorrlz.

We bought the blue bench for a client. $100.

Look at this leather bag! We bought it for a client for $40!

We almost bought this for a French Industrial client, but it was $400 and there wasn’t a good place for it in her house.

Whenever Emily sees brass, her eyes turn into spirals and she walks straight to it like a zombie. These bookends were $20. We didn’t buy them because we were depressed about the rain.

Emily: “Should we get this?” Me: “Sure.” Emily: “I’m bored.”

GOLD CHEST! GOLD CHEST! $100.

We bought this trunk for the end of a client’s enormous bed. $100.

We almost bought this for a client’s playtable. But it’s kinda boring and would probably benefit from being spray lacquered white, which would make it too expensive for their budget. $120.

Because it was raining, we ran away from the flea market almost as fast as all the vendors. We fled to the antique mall in Pasadena, where luckily they were serving hot apple cider and cookies. Which made us feel better because sometimes we like to eat our feelings. We saw a few cool things there, too.

Look at this cool architectural model! It would be a supes fun coffee table.

Emily: “I don’t like black leather, but I love this chair!” Me: “I’m bored.”

I like this painting at the Pasadena antique mall. It’s $125 though so I might just make a knock off myself. I am a terrible person.

We liked this bench for our modern-pop clients but then Emily sat on it and it almost broke. Emily weighs 17 lbs. Dealbreaker.

We like this table for our French industrial client but it was too big.

Look at this ridiculous hat/box situation! I mean, the beautiful handmade hat comes in a beautiful handmade box. SO much work! But so neato!

Me: “Look at that awesome armoire!” Emily: <cricket noises>

This trunk is stupid. I don’t know why I took a picture of it. I’m an idiot.

We like this Paris map but it’s $250. Conundrums.

This little drum is cute. And so are you. $150

This makes me want to kidnap Angela Lansbury and lock her in a room, forcing her to write about mysterious events like she did on ‘Murder She Wrote.’

We like this chair but it’s arms fell off. Oops! $250.

I know what I’m getting Emily for Christmas…

This Moroccan chest was $400. Not too bad…

We’ve looked at this painting many times, but never buy it because it’s tiny and $175.

Look, a trumpet horn thingy! Or whatever. $100. (We didn’t buy it).

These vintage 3D maps were a bit steep at $250, but we both loved them deeply.

Finally, because we could not stop shopping, we wandered around Old Town Pasadena. This is a rug we’re looking at for a client. It a pretty great value. It’s $299 for an 8′ x 10′! From Crate & Barrel.

At the end of the day we actually got a lot done. We were devastated by how lame the rained out flea market was, but a glamorous secret lunch in Pasadena followed by some good antique mall time made up for it. Thank goodness.

Fleamarkettimez: Rose Bowl

Dear Stormy Weather,

Where were you Sunday for the Rose Bowl Flea Market? I thought it was going to be all rainy and gross, but instead it was sunny and glorious. And hot. I showed up early with Bonnie, one of the new members of Team Emily and we scoured the Bowl for fun finds. I’m going to be honest, it wasn’t the best week for Rose Bowl. Firstly, Emily was in Orlando (Florida, no relation) and so that was sad. Second, we didn’t find everything we needed for our interior design clients (mainly, a ton of benches and a huge chandelier). Here’s what we saw…

A sexy brass regency coffee table. I don’t love the glass so if we’d bought it I probably would replace it with a rectangular piece. $400.

One of our clients loves mid-century, so we thought this could be good for them. It’s pretty basic but has nice lines and was in great condition for $125.

I liked this piece for our mid-century client as well, but we ended up choosing something with a bit more character. $400.

Another mid-century coffee table. $400.

This is a pretty basic mid-century chair, but at $350 it was a bit too expensive considering we’d have to reupholster. The upholstery was in fine condition but the retro fabric doesn’t really suit any of our clients.

This bench is gross, right? Or would it be cool reupholstered? I think it could be rad. Or disgusting. I can’t make up my mind… $500.

I love the lines of these chairs. I’d get them lacquered in white or black and reupholster in a pretty linen. $400/pair.

Am I the only one who LOVES chicken casseroles? I want to go to a dinner party where everything is served out of a ceramic bird. Glamour. $40 – $150.

This is the coffee table we bought for our mid-century client. Super cute, tons of character, also visually light so it doesn’t take up too much space in the middle of the room. $200.

Pretty Moroccan screen. $300.

These benches would have been awesome except for that weird foot thing… I love the punched metal back. $125/pair.

We are looking for a trunk for a French country/industrial client. This one is gorgeous, and looks like it’s covered in toxic mold. $200.

Another wooden trunk. This one was $400. Highway ROBBERY!

This chair is a cute shape and only $65 so I totally wanted to buy it (to reupholster, obviously) but we didn’t have a client for it so we had to leave it behind. Tears.

Apparently I like trunks. The chipping paint on this one is delightful. $250.

How FUN are these 50z reindeer? I totally wanted to buy them, but didn’t. $175.

When I was little I was obsessed with seals. This one has a ball on his nose. True, true love. $90/set 3 toys.

Oh what? A trunk? You DON’T say! $200. Sidenote: I didn’t actually buy ANY trunks, I just paparazzi’d them all day.

Owl lamp. $20. (ugly shade though)

Bonnie, our gorgeous assistant, bought this lovely lamp for her living room. Cute, no? $50.

We bought this adorable glass set to accessorize the credenza for our mid-century client. $35.

How awesomely amazingly disgustingly genius is the grotesque desk? I have no idea how much it cost, I was too ashamed/excited to ask.

I thought these could work for bedside lamps for a client, but then I thought that would be weird. Seem more appropriate for outdoor or something. $150/pair.

We bought these for $100/pair. Could work for a few of our clients.

I liked these aqua trunks. Good for accessorizing a big space because there were so many of them. $90/set 5.

Finally, and most excitingly, I found this xmas tree. It’s an original from the 50z. It looks small but it’s 7′ tall, which is exciting. I kind of want to set it up right now so I can stare at it forever but I am going to practice restraint. $100.

So that’s what I found over the weekend. Not too shabby!

Fleamarketing With Emily: Long Beach!

Dear Diary,

Emily and I headed out to Long Beach on Sunday to revel in all the flea covered glory of the Long Beach Antique and Collectible Market (AKA the flea). Usually Long Beach is good but this week was especially amazing. Unlike Rose Bowl, where prices are generally higher, Long Beach was full of deals. For the second week in a row it was raining, but to be honest I love that kind of weather because it keeps it from getting to hot while we’re running around buying EVERYTHING (which we did). Here’s what we found:

This fun horse sculpture. Which will make a great conversation piece (and scare the children) when we find it a home. $75.

Emily pretty much screamed “MINE!” when she saw these tins. $10.

We were into this leather chair and ottoman. Until we realized it was totally ugly except for the aged leather. $400.

I bought this great 1960s architectural drawing to go in my dining area. It’s a painting of an old strip mall. A FunFact about me is that I love old strip malls (like the ones in ‘Edward Scissorhands’). $75.

“Hey Emily: See that drawing? That’s your boyfriend.” $10.

We’ve seen these wire sculptures at fancypants stores for $80, but we got ours for $20. They look great sitting next to a stack of books or on a bar. One thing I’ve learned working on the show is how hard it is to find accessories that read as masculine, so whenever we find them we snatch them up.

If I had to use one image to define my outlook on the world, it might be this one. It’s pretty much the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen in my life (note the neon tube light on the lower portion). $1200.

We keep running into super cute dogs everywhere we go. And then we get all mad that we don’t have dogs. And then we realize that if we had dogs we’d be neglectful dogparents because we work too much to take care of anything. And then we hate ourselves for existing. And then we hug because we feel alone.

This headboard looks a little gross in this color, but we are going to customize it for a special client, changing the shape and using a superluxe fabric to make it the best headboard ever. Exciting. $60.

We didn’t buy any of this, but I couldn’t help but notice the totally OCD way the seller displayed everything. I love old Pyrex, especially when it’s displayed by someone as obsessive as I am.

This will make a nice vessel to stick some branches in. I’d put it on an outdoor dining table for a garden party (sidenote: I regret that I’m not at a garden party RIGHT NOW. Hurry, Summer, HURRY!). $40.

This dodo bird carving was stupid cheap. $30. We were all scared to ask because it looked like it would be $300.

Whenever Emily spots a horse sculpture, her eyes glaze over and she immediately walks over to it and buys it. The lady loves horse art, but who doesn’t? $60.

I am kinda sad we didn’t buy this guy. Such a pretty piece. $250.

Some fat little quails to add to our menagerie of birds. $30.

While Emily is an actual crazy cat lady, I just have a thing for insane cat paintings. Part of me wants to start a collection of them. Another part of me would prefer to not be single forever. Decisions, decisions! $100.

A pretty metal box. When you have to fill up shelves, coffee tables, and side tables every week, you can never have enough boxes. $20.

We totally scored on paintings. So many pretty, cracking landscapes and seascapes. $50.

Emily and our new friend Tiki. Who knew we’d ever be friends with someone like that? Tiki you so crazy! $40.

Rebecca, the art department treasurer, scored these rad chairs for her office. I was seething with envy. She’s going to reupholster them in something fancy. I think they’re cute as a button. $300.

Another pretty painting. It’s so romantic and enthralling in real life. Makes me want to run away to the mountains, make naturepaintings, and scowl at any human that comes near me, enjoying only the company of plants and animals. $125.

Emily never met a brass animal head she didn’t like. $20.

Ratty nature painting. Loveworn. $20.

Oh hi, fancyman in a tophat! Let’s be friends! $30.

Brass magnifying object thing. $20. Why not?

Flea Marketing With Emily: Pasadena Rose Bowl!

Dear Reader,

This past Sunday was the mother of all flea markets, Rose Bowl. It started out a little rocky because I went out the night before until 2 AM and then woke up at 5:45 to rush over to Pasadena only to find out it was rainy and gross. Sidenote: I love how devastating it is when it rains in LA. First of all, no one ever expects it to happen so we have no idea what to do. “What is this strange wet substance falling from the heavens?” we all asked each other, bewildered that something so inconvenient could ever happen in Southern California. No one had umbrellas and everyone was just walking around in the rain, miserable, pretending that if we acted like it wasn’t raining we could just make it stop. Which we did. The end of the day was glorious and rain-free and the stuff we found totally made up for the fact that we had were wet and sad in the early morning. Anyway, enough with the chit-chat, let’s get to business.

Emily spotted this pretty chair. We’re both drawn to anything blue so this was a definite yes from the get go. $375.

It seems impossible to resist globes, no matter how ubiquitous they’ve become. It’s especially exciting to find a specimen like this, which is classic and yet not your run-of-the-mill boring school globe. $50.

Emily found this little guy, which we’re going to use as a side table (with the rolling cover open). Totally cute and interesting. $65.

This lamp looks a little naked, but once we buy him a pretty shade, he’s gonna look super gorgeous. $45.

Find me a person who doesn’t love Honest Abe and I will challenge that person to a duel. Just the very thought of him and his steadfast dedication to honesty brings warmth to my heart. $20.

This pic is a double-whammy because we bought not only the cool folding table, but also the totally glamourous typewriter (which we are only allowed to handle with white gloves). Typewriter $85. Table $75.

Vintage telephones make such nice sculptures. And they kind make me wish I still had a land line. Can you imagine some turn-of-the-century man with a top hat and handlebar mustache saying “Can you hear me now?” $20.

“E” street sign. Emily insists on hiding E’s in every episode. I’m still trying to figure out why. Guess I’ll never know… $10.

Sexy filing box. We bought 3. $10 each.

This was one of my favorite things we bought. It was a “Class of 1912″ print with all these graduates. But the graduates are all 75 years old so they either took a super long time to graduate from college or they were graduating from something else. Mysterious. Note our pretty friend/SFAS teammate, Rebecca. $25.

This photo timer gave us all nostalgia for the days we spent developing film in the darkroom. And then we felt old. $30.

Hey Little Lamp, what’s your name? Wanna come home with me? OK. $120.

A staircase lamp, gets me every time. If I had a lamp like this growing up I would have forced my hamster to walk up it over and over and over. Thank goodness my parents didn’t have one. $125.

When we asked why this fan was $100 the seller said “Because it’s green.” So we bought it. Because we needed it (seriously). $100.

I know, I know, these look totally gross. But imagine them with more luxe upholstery in a super quirky-chic room. They’re going to look great. I promise. Or your money back! $15 each.

Emily pointed out this piece because it’s functions like a cloche (meaning you can display things in it) but it’s a little different (it’s important to mix things up). $75.

So, there you have it. Another totally fun shopping adventure with Emily. Delightful.

Fleamarketingtimez With Emily: Pasadena City College

Dear Reader,

Part of my job as Emily’s assistant on Secrets From A Stylist is to help her shop. And here’s a (non) secret: she loves vintage! Where do we find all this glamourous, story-filled vintage furniture and accessories? That’s right, the flea market. Every Sunday, we go to whatever flea market is happening. If you’re not sure which is coming up, I find this guide to be quite helpful. Anyway, because Emily hates the idea of anyone snagging a great piece before she can, she shows up at 6 AM. I usually show up after her but I can just picture her clinging to the gates, eager to get in. Since she is such a nice boss, she lets me sleep in before I show up to put in my two cents and carry giant sofas over my head. It’s always a great time and we are always exhausted by the day’s end. All worth it to snag the goodies that make our show so unique. Okay, so enough with the explaining and jibber-jabber, here’s what we saw this week at Pasadena City College.

Here is Emily being adorable next to some mid-century rope chairs. This is totally my thing. Something I’ve learned from Emily as she constantly style diagnoses me is that I love any chair that is A) woven and B) mid-century. A combo of the both is, like, the best. And here’s the best part: the pair cost $100. Totally ridic, right?

You may have noticed we use a ton of books on the show. To be honest, we still haven’t found a source that’s ideal for cheap big books but we tend to spend $1 on regular books and $5-$40 for larger tabletop art books. Another great source we’ve found for books is Counterpoint Books in Franklin Village. If you’re searching for quality used books on fascinating topics, they are great. But if you’re trying to fill a shelf for a glamorous makeover TV show, they also have a good bargain books section. The books we got here were all around $10. Not too shabby.

Emily found this crazy bird sculpture. Totally wacko and 70s, thus awesome. $25.

I love these baskets and curious how Emily will choose to style them. She normally hates things that look too similar bunched together, but I feel like these seem unique enough to stand together as a collection without looking too much like a set from a big box store. They were $75 for all three.

So, this is a slightly bad picture but we found this old coffee table that we’re going to make into a tufted bench for an upcoming episode. We have a totally amazing upholsterer so I can’t wait to see how it turns out. It’s totally over the top, but I love any piece of furniture that has feet. Someday, I dream of bathing in one of those glamourous claw-footed bathtubs. It cost $100 and we’ll spend a few hundred getting a cushion built, but it’s going to be a total conversation piece so it’s still a huge bargain.

Emily spotted this great pottery. I love the shape. And the price (I think it was $5).

We are always on the lookout for unique/bizarre art, so this can collection was particularly exciting. $100.

A pretty brass chandelier for $250. A total steal for something with so much character and presence.

I’m kind of obsessed with this brass alligator. It’s little jaw cracks open and closed (I have no idea why, it doesn’t seem like it would work as a nutcracker). Sidenote: we have a new cataloguing system for purchases intended for the show so we’ve been having fun posing with our new friends, whether they be pottery, sculptures, or chairs. $12.50 was the listed price, but we got it for $10. Never hurts to ask for a few bucks off.

This lamp is totally exciting and great. It’s about five feet tall and if I were a totally rad hippie lady living in Laurel Canyon, listening to Joni Mitchell in my 70′s-inspired home, I’d want it for myself. $50 because we bought it with the claw-footed bench. Vendors are much more likely to give discounts if you buy multiple items.

I wasn’t there when Emily found these but they might be my favorite find of the week because they’re so out of control. I want to steal them and put them by my front door to scare away burglars. $100 for the pair.

This gross owl was used for the show’s style diagnostic. I’m kind of into how revolting it is. Emily is so good at spotting the crazy stuff. $5.

I like that this painting has totally chaotic color and yet somehow still seems calm. $20.

This lamp is fun, right? We’re going to change the shade obviously, just to update it. We’re considering covering it in a pretty linen, just to experiment with recovering shades (Fun Fact: I secretly want to learn how to make lampshades, mainly because buying new ones is so expensive). $60.

Here I am with a great big pot we found. It was totally filthy but worth every bit of grime that got all over me while I was transporting it back to storage. $50.

OK, I lied before. This was my favorite find of the day. I don’t know why I like it so much. Probably because the Kennedys make me laugh and it looks like they’re rubbing their cheeks together. Brilliant. $10.
